Pet Health Emergencies: When to Rush In

Not every limp or upset stomach means an emergency, but some do — and in those cases, minutes matter more than you'd think. Here's how to tell which is which.

Go now, don't wait
  • Difficulty breathing, choking, or blue/pale gums
  • Collapse, seizure, or unresponsiveness
  • Suspected poisoning (rat bait, chocolate, human medication)
  • A hard, bloated abdomen with unproductive retching — especially in deep-chested dogs
  • Heavy bleeding, or any injury from a road accident
  • Straining to urinate with no output, especially in male cats

Monitor closely, call if it continues
  • A single episode of vomiting or soft stool, with your pet still bright and eating
  • Mild limping that eases with rest
  • A smaller appetite for less than a day
While you're on your way
  • Keep your pet warm and as still as possible; avoid handling an injured limb more than you need to
  • Don't give human painkillers — several common ones are toxic to pets
  • Call ahead so we're ready when you arrive
